Ted Atwood, President & CEO of Trakref, was interviewed by green builder Matt Hoots to answer some common questions and misconceptions in regards to refrigerant, environmental sustainability, and decreasing your company’s environmental footprint through proper refrigerant tracking.

Proper Refrigerant Management: Beyond the Invoice

Ted begins the interview by explaining the environmental impact of refrigerants and introducing the fact that we are still leaking the same amount of refrigerant as we did 26 years ago.

That’s because most refrigerants that are produced are leaked, or assumed to have leaked, as the HVACR industry does not have a good grasp on what is happening to these materials in their service life, Ted explains.

“Most service people add refrigerant to a system, and they usually transfer that information between a service provider and building owner using an invoice. The invoice doesn’t really recognize the total impact to the system of the refrigerant added, and then you have to look at all the invoices to see what has been occurring over that system’s life.”

That’s why, at Trakref, we embed service activity into the workflows of our software solutions to supplement what is happening on an invoice and then move stakeholders beyond it to achieve true refrigerant compliance management. This helps with compliance as well as corporate sustainability initiatives, making ESG reporting and answering sustainability audit questions easy.
